Employment

Thank you for your interest in Yardarm Knot Fisheries, Red Salmon Cannery. We are a salmon canning and fresh frozen operation located in Naknek, Alaska. We pride ourselves on maintaining one of the highest quality products on the market. We are looking for people to be part of our team.

We operate for a short time, typically from mid-June until late July. When we are in full production our facility operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The work is demanding and you will be assigned to a 16 hours per day seven days a week shift.

WAGES: For each regular hour worked new processors will be paid at a minimum of $ 7.75 and each overtime hour will be paid at a minimum of $ 11.625. Any hours worked over eight per day or forty straight time hours per week will be considered overtime. Each person is assigned a shift that has them working up to 16 hours per day everyday. Paychecks are issued at the completion of the season, however, employees will be able to request a weekly cash draw in the amount of $ 50.00 based on hours worked. All advances will be deducted from the season end paycheck.

BONUS PROGRAM: If management has determined that an employee is eligible for rehire, they shall be entitled to a retro hourly bonus that will increase the regular hour base pay for the 2011 season to $ 9.00 for each regular hour worked and $ 13.50 per overtime hour worked. These determinations will be made and any retro earnings paid out by August 15, 2011. This is a bonus only and will not be the new base rate for future seasons.

NATURE OF WORK: Processors must be willing and able to perform a variety of tasks including (but not limited to) gutting, cleaning, packing, icing of seafood, assorted canning jobs, operating various machinery, and general cleaning of all work areas. Working conditions vary depending upon the tasks assigned which could include noisy areas where machines are operating, wet areas where the seafood is cleaned, and cold areas such as the freezer plant. Much of the work is repetitive; you will find yourself tired, wet, cold and working 7 days a week.

HOURS OF WORK: Most Alaska fisheries are highly regulated to provide for resource conservation. As a result, commercial fishing boats are frequently limited to fish on certain days of the week. The effect on seafood processing companies is they operate when product is available and suspend operations when no product is available. Processors therefore must be prepared for highly erratic work schedules. Also, we make no guarantees of hours. During the peak of the season, fishing is usually heavy and a tremendous amount of work is compressed into a short period of time.

TRANSPORTATION: The point of hire for processors is Naknek, AK. The cost of transportation to and from the Plant is the responsibility of the individual hired. However, the company will cover the cost of the round trip ticket (from either Seattle or Anchorage) upon successful completion of the employment term.

HOUSING: Separate male and female quarters will be provided with rooms that house 2-4 people. Individual rooms do not have private baths, rather a shared restroom/showering area is on each floor. Linens are provided at no cost to all working employees. It is recommended that you bring your own sleeping bag and towels. We do NOT charge for room and board.

WHAT TO PACK: Workers should bring clothes that are appropriate for cold climates. The company supplies raingear, boots, gloves and aprons. However, you will be required to stand for extended periods of time and may prefer to purchase your own set of Xtra Tuff (brand name) knee high boots that tend to be more comfortable. Personal storage space is limited; therefore we recommend the use of duffel bags or any collapsible type luggage. Bringing valuables such as jewelry, expensive radios, etc. is at the employee’s risk. Employees are responsible for bringing their own personal hygiene items, as well as a battery operated alarm clock. Long underwear, wool socks and a warm cap are advised. Other items that you may find useful: work clothes sufficient to last one week (pants, t-shirts, sweatshirts and a warm hat); shower towel and shower shoes, camera (disposables are best); prescription medications sufficient for entire stay in Alaska; spare glasses/contact lenses; phone cards. We also recommend that employees bring some spending money as it may be a few weeks or more before an advance is available.

The Company does have a store on site with limited items. In addition there is a store in town, which is located approximately one mile from the plant – but depending on your shift and time of day that may not be an option.

MEDICAL / DENTAL CARE: All applicants are advised that, if hired they should plan ahead as these services are not readily available in the Naknek area. All employees must bring enough of any prescriptions they may need to last the duration of the season.

IDENTIFICATION: If hired, all employees must bring proper identification as required by Homeland Security. The documents need to establish citizenship status and employment eligibility in the United States. The most common documents presented are a Passport, Resident Card or Driver’s License AND Social Security Card or Birth Certificate.

MISCELLANEOUS: ABSOLUTELY NO drugs, alcohol or weapons will be allowed. Smoking is not allowed in the bunkhouses; however, there are designated smoking areas throughout the Plant.

In addition, employees who receive packages in the mail may be required to open them in the presence of Plant Management.
